How to get out of a rut with the butterfly effect ✨

Published 8 months ago • 2 min read

Hi Reader,

I mentioned in my last email that I’ve been in a creative rut for the past few years, and I’ve just generally been feeling stuck with where I’m at in life.

It feels like I’ve been moving through wet cement, trying to get somewhere but I’m not quite sure where.

Late one night, I decided to search on YouTube for the phrase ‘how to transform your life.’

I knew I needed some form of change, but I wasn’t sure what.

The younger me would have thought I needed to do something drastic like move across the country or chop my hair off.

The slightly wiser, current-day version of me realized that perhaps I could see how other people had transformed their lives without burning everything to the ground first.

One video that piqued my curiosity was by Tina Huang called How to Completely Transform Your Life in 6 Months.

Her video talks about how one intentional change can have a positive trickle-down effect into all areas of your life.

As I thought about the “one thing” that might change my life, I realized that what's going to help me change is doing the thing I’ve been avoiding.

You know that thing that’s always in the back of your mind but you’re always too tired/busy/afraid to do it? Yeah, that one.

I’ve been exploring this in my own life by doing the thing I’ve been avoiding. You can see what I mean in this week's post.

Give it a read and let me know what your “one thing” would be!

✍🏻 A return to writing: In case you missed it, I shared what’s been on my mind lately and how I'm making a recommitment to writing (which is what this week’s blog post is all about)

❤️ Best-case scenario journaling: My friend Les shared this concept of journaling with a ‘what if things work out?’ kind of mentality and I love it.

💭 A good thought: “You’re always balancing comfort vs. growth. One isn’t better than the other, but you should know which one you’re choosing every time you make a decision.” - Kayla Voight

a moment of bliss.

I want to create a little feature where you can share your moment of bliss, and I’ll pick one to include in each newsletter.

A moment of bliss is something in your day that you’re savoring or grateful for, no matter how small or out there it might seem.

I think it will help us all feel more connected to one another and offer a reminder of the good things in life.

Submit your moment of bliss here to be featured.

Hi Reader, How’s December treating you? Are you fretting about the new year already, wondering what goals you’re going to set or what you might do differently next year? If so, this is your reminder to pause for a moment. (This newsletter is called The Moment, after all.) Just take a second to breathe. Before we even get to thinking about 2024, let’s be here right now. For the past few years, I haven’t set goals at the beginning of the year. I used to think I had to plan out my entire year in...

Hi Reader, There’s a motto I like to tell myself when my thoughts are all over the place: “Your head is not for storing information.” Sure, our minds are great for generating ideas and finding solutions to problems, but they’re not great at remembering every little thing that needs to be done. That’s where the inbox system comes in. I recently shared about how closing the open loops in your life can help reduce stress, and the inbox system is one way you can manage and organize those open...

Hi Reader, Do you remember the “That Girl” trend from 2021? “That Girl” is someone who gets up early, meditates, drinks a smoothie, journals, works out, eats healthy food, and takes her vitamins all before 8 a.m. The craze has died down now, but there’s still a lot of advice out there telling you to cram as many ‘good’ habits as you can into your mornings (and life in general). I know I’ve gotten sucked into lists on Pinterest for the perfect morning routine and thought to myself ‘If only I...
